Gender dynamics in Polish drama after 2000

    Get PDF
When discussing Polish theatre scene, critics and scholars often lament the decline of ‘high art’ and the disappearance of ambitious Romantic repertoire from Polish theatres after 1989. Yet, strangely enough none of these ongoing debates identifies such problems as lack of gender equality; devastating effects of anti-abortion law; insufficient network of support for victimised and unemployed women; exceptionally high tolerance for sexist, homophobic and misogynist attitudes in both public and private spheres of activities; as well as the general dominant patriarchal structure of power. This is even more surprising when one reads plays written by female and male writers published (and/or performed) after 2000 as their dramatic worlds address many feminist and gender-related concerns. This study (focusing on gender dynamics) reveals that the gap between the voice of critical and scholarly inquiry and the ‘voice’ of the plays themselves has been widening rather than narrowing. The article addresses this concern with reference to selected plays by Krystyna Kofta, Monika Powalisz, Magdalena Fertacz, Dana ƁukasiƄska as well as Marek Pruchniewski, Krzysztof Bizio, PrzemysƂaw Wojcieszek and Robert Bolesto

    Neutrino masses and R-parity violation

We review different contributions to the neutrino masses in the context of R-parity violating supersymmetry in a basis independent manner. We comment on the generic spectrum expected in such a scenario comparing different contributions.Comment: Invited brief review for Mod. Phys. Lett. A, 15 pages, uses axodraw.st

Getting It Right: Strategies for After-School Success

    Get PDF
This report synthesizes the last 10 years of findings from P/PV's and other researchers' work to address one of the most demanding challenges facing today's after-school programs -- how to create and manage programs that stand the best chance of producing specific, policy-relevant outcomes. It examines recruitment strategies that attract young people to activities, the qualities that make activities engaging and motivate participants to attend regularly, and the infrastructure -- staffing, management and monitoring -- needed to support such activities. The report's final chapter explores the fiscal realities of after-school programming, considering how administrators might stretch existing dollars to enhance services

Germanium:gallium photoconductors for far infrared heterodyne detection

    Get PDF
Highly compensated Ge:Ga photoconductors have been fabricated and evaluated for high bandwidth heterodyne detection. Bandwidths up to 60 MHz have been obtained with corresponding current responsivity of 0.01 A/W

Electrical and infrared properties of thin niobium microbolometers near T(sub c)

    Get PDF
Niobium microbolometers approximately 1 micron wide x 2 micron long x 10 nm thick have been integrated at the feeds of equiangular spiral antennas made of 200 nm thick Nb. The device's current-voltage characteristics and infrared responsivity as a function of DC bias voltage were measured over a range of temperature spanning approximately plus or minus 2 percent around T(sub c). The greatest voltage responsivity occurs well below T(sub c), in a regime where the I-V curve is significantly hysteretic due to self-heating and resembles the I-V curve of a superconducting microbridge

Polish Studies and the Concerns of Literary Globalisation. The article analyses the phenomenon of literary globalisation in view of its potential usefulness and impact on a broadly understood Polish Studies. Making references to various research approaches such as postcolonial studies, gender studies, cultural studies, eco-feminism and a search for ‘glocality;’ Grossman suggests a few potential solutions that can re-locate Polish-studies research on the international humanities’ orbit. In this approach, globalisation does not appear as a threat but rather, an empowering shift worth taking advantage of

Computations involving differential operators and their actions on functions

    Get PDF
The algorithms derived by Grossmann and Larson (1989) are further developed for rewriting expressions involving differential operators. The differential operators involved arise in the local analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems. These algorithms are extended in two different directions: the algorithms are generalized so that they apply to differential operators on groups and the data structures and algorithms are developed to compute symbolically the action of differential operators on functions. Both of these generalizations are needed for applications
